Cross-Exchange Smart Order Routing & Execution System

Built a production-grade Smart Order Router and Consolidated Order Book engine to execute large-notional crypto orders across fragmented venues with minimal market impact.

Challenge

Stratos Capital needed institutional-grade execution infrastructure for large OTC and programmatic crypto orders. Naive single-venue market-taking was causing significant slippage and price impact. Liquidity was fragmented across exchanges with no unified depth view or intelligent routing layer.

Solution

Helios designed a Consolidated Order Book engine aggregating real-time depth across multiple exchanges to provide a unified liquidity view and execution path optimisation. A staggered execution engine split large parent orders into dynamically sized child orders executed simultaneously across venues, with adaptive participation rates and spread-sensitive placement. Capital pre-positioning and rebalancing mechanisms ensured efficient cross-exchange balance utilisation. Microstructure-aware routing logic incorporated order book imbalance analysis and adverse selection avoidance heuristics. Execution analytics tracked slippage vs arrival price, venue-wise quality, and full order lifecycle metrics.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Designed a cross-exchange Smart Order Routing system for optimal execution of large OTC and programmatic orders with minimal market impact
  • Architected a Consolidated Order Book engine aggregating real-time liquidity across multiple exchanges — providing unified depth, fragmentation analysis, and execution path optimisation
  • Built routing algorithms to dynamically determine optimal venue selection, order slicing strategies, and capital distribution across exchanges
  • Developed a staggered execution engine splitting large parent orders into child orders executed simultaneously across venues with dynamic real-time adaptation
  • Implemented price impact minimisation strategies: liquidity-aware execution, adaptive participation rates, and spread-sensitive order placement
  • Designed execution logic for slippage control, benchmark tracking, partial fill handling, intelligent re-routing, and real-time market adaptation
  • Built systems to determine optimal capital placement across exchanges based on consolidated liquidity, execution demand, and transfer constraints
  • Designed pre-positioning and rebalancing mechanisms for minimal execution delays and efficient cross-exchange balance utilisation
  • Incorporated microstructure-aware decision logic: order book depth and imbalance analysis, spread dynamics, and adverse selection avoidance
  • Developed execution analytics tracking slippage vs arrival price, venue-wise execution quality, and order lifecycle metrics
  • Implemented fault-tolerant execution with exchange-level redundancy, failover routing, and robust error recovery

Outcomes

  • Production-grade execution engine handling large notional orders with reduced market impact
  • Consolidated Order Book providing real-time unified depth view and execution path optimisation across venues
  • Institutional-style OTC execution workflow aggregating fragmented crypto liquidity into a single layer
  • Foundation established for advanced adaptive routing and liquidity-aware execution strategies
